This Thursday at Someday Lounge we are ringing in our Hey how ya dooin? 3 Year Anniversary with the one and only Maseo of De La Soul (their DJ). He is an amazing performer! Not only djing but every once in a while jumping on the mic and hyping up the crowd Maseo is sure to please this week. Here are some videos that will surely hype you up for the next legend of hiphop to grace the stage at Someday. + a little Q+A to get you better acquainted.
Here's a new mix tape from Colorado native Sean Herman aka DJ IDULL. Two fun facts about The Hermanator. He is one of my Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 gaming partners. And also he toured with the late great James Brown! Crazy huh? Anyways, enjoy the free mix and get ready for Maseo of De La Soul this week at The Fix!!!
Beyonda has been voted "Best Dj in Portland" a couple times. I think she has a pretty big following as well. The time has finally come for her to join us at Someday. I have no idea what she is going to play. Maybe she'll drop some soul 45's or maybe some jiggy southern 3 6 mafia-esque joints? Who knows? It's up to her. And we usually don't do The Fix on Saturdays but this event is a special occasion. Also to make it more awesome there are going to be some drink specials. What the are... I don't know, yet. But it will be worth your while to be out next weekend. Lots of things going on and we are keeping it affordable just for you!
Here is some more detailed info about her. "Beyonda got her start in her hometown of Memphis, TN collecting soul records and sharpening her skills before hitting the streets as a DJ. Straight from Soulsville, she knows all about southern hospitality, musical roots, and payin’ dues. After a successful stint in Memphis, Beyonda decided to test herself elsewhere and began her journey to the West. Following her arrival in Portland, OR, she toured Europe and began DJing for the female hip-hop group, Siren’s Echo. They toured and opened for numerous groups (Wutang, Zion I, Lifesavas) for a year before she decided to focus on building her reputation on the dance floor. These days Beyonda keeps heads and dance floor maniacs engaged for hours. She mixes it up with serious dexterity and a variety of genres, adding dirty south, hip hop, live mash-ups, soul, old school, punk, rock, and turntablizm with a bit of the unexpected. One can't stand still when she is on the tables, or leave to use the bathroom, or go to the bar, or move an inch from the dance floor! In fact, you may want to tear the roof down. If the dance floor isn’t your scene Beyonda also loves to use her creativity to form seamless eclectic sets for an engaging laidback atmosphere.
But don't just believe us; check out what the Portland Mercury has to say on April 13, 2006: “Dudes, I hear this all the time: "Everybody in Portland is a DJ and none of 'em actually know how to DJ. Except DJ Beyonda. Beyonda's totally world class." Seriously, all the time.”
Not really a diss track...just a diss, maybe he should have made a song about this situation instead? And most recently in the news...Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift.
PS if you are coming out tonight, before you leave bring a can or a box of non-perishable food with you. Someday Lounge is taking donations for the Oregon Food Drive right now. Giving = Good Karma.
After catching wreck on dozens of 45-only (aka donuts) Hip-Hop sets worldwide, Peanut Butter Wolf has gotten together with the good folks at Five Day Weekend to put together this insane collection of 10 Rap 45’s packaged in a beautiful heavy-weight collector’s tin. The 20 classic Hip Hop cuts, personally hand picked by PBW and taken from such iconic labels as Enjoy, Sleeping Bag, Fresh, Cold Chillin’, Strong Cityand many more are guaranteed to not only put a smile on the face of any avid Old School Hip Hop fan, but also provide a great introduction to the golden era for any Rap fans of the new millennium.
“This project is such a great honor for me to be involved with. This is one of the crowning moments of my music career, seriously. As a kid growing up inSan Jose,CAwhen all this stuff was coming out, I was hooked and half a lifetime later I still am. I can only imagine what these songs sound like to a teenager today hearing them for the first time, just as they probably wonder what it was like for someone like me to have heard them for the first time back when it was all happening. I've also always wondered what it was like to grow up in one of the five boroughs in Hip Hop's infancy in the 80s. These songs were the closest I got to knowing.”

Hello blog reader. I figure no one actually reads this crap so why not post my super secret entry into the Art Crank Poster Show. I am not able to be there in person, because I will be djing at The Fix alongside Kez and Shafiq Husayn from the one and only Sa-Ra Creative Partners. However my posters will be at The Ace Cleaners for sale this Thursday. $5 of every poster sold will go to Bikes to Rwanda. Maybe there is some way that I can donate all of the money from my posters ( assuming I will sell at least one, most likely not ) to them or some other charitable cause. So go buy a damn poster on Thursday.
ARTCRANK Portland 2009 is set for Thursday, October 1 at The Cleaners at The Ace Hotel, located at 403 SW 10th Avenue. Admission is free, all posters are priced at $30.
anyways, here's my entry. Hope you enjoy, Tha Digsta
Hey there fellow dj's, This here article I found is very interesting. I think this singular topic draws a fine line between good and bad dj's. So everybody. Step to one side.
The esoteric art of the opening DJ Words / Jack O'Shaughnessy Published / Tue, 22 Sep 2009
Every once in a while as a dj someone will notice all the hard work, effort, money, and time that you put into djing. Most times you're just the dude no one knows on stage, sweating under some bright lights trying to figure out what to play next. Renegade Mag wrote up the night that Kez and I played Various. I thought it was pretty interesting that someone actually contemplated what we would do, or if some crowd would follow us from The Fix or Rockbox. That's pretty funny. Like we have fans. I can't speak for Kez, but I don't have any fans.
If you're like me, you come home late at night. Usually not sober and you need to snack on something. And when you sit in front of the tv with your warmed up hungry man just waiting for you to dive into the volcano fudge browny dessert you just need something to watch. Here is what I watch...
about the 1:15 mark, you will barf in your mouth, just a bit.

ok, this one might not be airing anytime soon, but...
I would love to personally thank our sponsors!, Tha Digsta
The Fix presents Shafiq Husayn … Shafiq performs at The Fix Thursday October 1st, 2009. Someday Lounge 125 NW 5th 9pm, 21+ $5
Shafiq Husayn grew up in Oakland, Watts, South Central, Texas and the South Bronx where he experienced hip hop in it's infancy, joined Zulu Nation and ran with pioneers Afrika Bambatta and Akrika Islam. He has contributed production to Ice-T's Original Gangster, worked with Donald D on his Let the Horns Blow record, King Tee on Tha Triflin Album and IV Life, and assisted Lord Finesse on his album The Return Of The Funky Man. In the mid-90's, Taz Arnold paid a visit to LA with a CD of Dilla beats. After hearing it, Shafiq insisted they join and create a movement- Sa-Ra Creative Partners Production Company. Sa-Ra translates to "the children of the powerful and infinite force in the universe." Om'Mas Keith joined the group, adding his musicality and multi-instrumental talents. In 2007 Shafiq began working on Shafiq En' A-Free-Ka, fleshing out existing beats and creating new music. Shafiq En' A-Free-Ka represents Shafiq in a state of mental and spiritual freedom that is in turn reflected in the music. Shafiq Husayn has always maintained innovation and growth as his purpose and focus. From producing with Ice-T, to penning songs for Erykah Badu, to innovating as part of Sa-Ra, and now creating his own music, Shafiq Husayn strives to convey who he is through his music. A must for lovers of World, Jazz, Funk and left-field hip hop.
The Fix features Dundiggy, DJ Kez and Rev, Shines playing Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Afro-Beat, Baile, Soul, Funk, Latin & other quality jams!
And that's just a taste...surely you can expect only the finest beats, Sincerely, Tha Digsta
While waiting for De La to take the stage I had an interesting convo with Gabe Bernstein, a fellow hiphop head. He told me about two dope porjects that were on the horizon. Anyways, he posted them on my facebook and I just had to share.
Hello there you special person you. De La Soul was alright last night. It's a long story. I would give it a solid B.
Anyways, the new Luke Vibert album is pretty dope. Check out this preview youtube.
I like this sound. This album totally feels like it lives in a similar space as the newest Daedelus album. Not too sure what sort of workflow or equipment makes it sound similar. Maybe it's the monome or just being on the same wavelength? Who knows, but... That first track was some dubstep ish.
Aaron and myself are djing at Various tonight here in Portland. Various is at Branx. Various is one of my favorite monthlies in Portland and I am so excited that they asked me to play their night. I would like to BIG UP Ryan Organ and Monkeytek! =)
You might hear these tracks tonight.
I am about this track right now.
See ya tonight at Branx 320 SE 2nd Ave PDX Thanks for listening, Tha Digsta
I am so proud to announce that we are having Dám Funk!
"Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Dãm-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles of Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk." - Stones Throw website
When I am mashin out late on the 710 to glendale this is what's in the 8 track
Hello there. This is some brand new new from Portland's own Dave Notti and Hi-res. It's dope give it a listen, pls.
Words From DaveNotti:
----------------------------------
"I've been rhyming for quite some time, I'm almost coming up on 10 years oddly enough. In all my years rhyming, I've very rarely come across someone who I've been granted the opportunity to work with where both individuals were on the same page. I can honestly say, working with Hi-Res was one of the most cohesive projects I've ever done and am honored to not only call him a partner but a friend! This is a project that took us literally a month too make, all the rhymes written and beats were made to eachothers liking. There wasn't a single hitch, almost too good to be true! We wanted to create a project that wasn't necessarily an album, but also shouldn't be considered a mixtape. Short but sweet, convenient enough to get into but not to the point where you almost feel compelled to listen because it's a full fledged LP. My first thank you goes to someone I've thanked for quite some time, who I feel needs no introduction and has been true and true from 21 jump street; our friend KENNY FRESH. You truly have a bright, bright future! Hold up...lemme clear some space for this shit...
I think I can speak on behalf of not just Myself and Hi-Res here, but all the artists who've dealt business through you...you truly are a rare type of person. Very genuine and honest, real and confidential. It's hard to come across people of your caliber nowadays and We, The New Chill, are truly humbled to have been freshly selected and shown as much love and interests as we have from you. You will continue to have my utmost 100% support in all that you do, no questions asked. True story!
I could definitely go for some Top Ramen right now typing this, sheesh! Once again, thank you listener for checking "The New Chill" out!"
So I am on vacation. I went to southern California to see my dad. While on my trip we visited a farm down here. It was very intriguing. The guy running the place was a little weird though. See for yourself.
Mecca for Juggalos. Who wants to go in on gas money with me! Fuck! Everywhere you look there is gonna be some crazy ass shit poppin off. Don't be a neden hole. Let's ride!
FRESHselects.net & The Fix present the official Portland debut of one of Detroit's finest - INVINCIBLE (http://www.myspace.com/invincilana).
w/ your resident Fix DJ's: Rev. Shines DJ Kez Dundiggy
and hosted by: Ronin Roc
21 & over $3 at the door
"It is truly rare to find an artist like Detroit based MC, Invincible. She scripts lyrics to communicate both personal experience and a desire to affect social change; through her clear delivery, witty wordplay, and conceptual songwriting, she reminds listeners, you don’t have to choose between style and substance. A decade deep into her path, Invincible is dedicated to honing her craft and pushing the hip-hop envelope. Her vivid lyrics narrate the politics of everyday life, rooted in the struggle for change, laced over cinematic tracks from Waajeed of PPP/Bling47, Lab Techs, and others. Dubbed by XXL Magazine as “every A&Rs worst nightmare” for rejecting major label deals and general industry politics, Invincible started her own record label, EMERGENCE, self-releasing her long-awaited full length LP, Shape Shifters, in June of 2008. Invincible is not to be missed by fans of raw live energy and true hip-hop talent. Fresh Selects is a Portland based but internationally known blog promoting & supporting quality music from quality artists.
RUMOR, GAMBLE, PARTY? Here are somethings that I think could happen: Dave will show up and deliver the funniest stand-up act of his career. Hey he has been MIA for a minute, right? He's had time to come up with some make you wanna vomit material.
Another likely scenario is the faux show. Someone comes out from the crowd at 12am and reveals that Dave is on his way and will arrive soon. Crowd gets antsy. Then the real deal is revealed. Ronin Roc is spinning at Tube and you are directed to not pass go and not collect 200$. Go back to Tube. You now have permission to start a spoiled kid riot!
Or the most awesome way things could go. Dave comes out. Dave asks for some real Oregon "kush" or whatever you kids are calling it these days. Dave requests that everyone join him at Silo or Ascension for an all night party.
Who knows what will happen. I suppose I will check Facebook at 12:15am. anyways, I hope it's the first scenario. Have a good night. Tha Digsta!
Word. Hey buddy thanks for coming out to The Fix for the last couple weeks. We've had a good run for a while. The M64 record release party, Diamond D, and our regular nights have been great! Let's keep it moving. Tomorrow night I plan on playing a bunch of stuff to dance to like these ::
And here are some free mp3's from one of my favorite labels out of Canada, Home Breakin' Happy Canada Day to all you Canadians!
If that's your ticket or your bag, come out, if not, stay at home, buster!
And now here's our new segment... Random design topics: You might be seeing more of this in the future. I really kind of like this typeface. Klimax taa daa
meanwhile,
ok here's the real reason why I am posting. It's our independence day and that's pretty important. We could have ended up like Taiwan or India. We're not. We're rad and we're Americans. With freedom. . . to be stupid.
The Fix® is OHMEGA WATTS, REV. SHINES, DJ KEZ, and DUNDIGGY. Our host is the lovable RONIN ROC. We hold down the dance floor at Someday Lounge in Portland, Oregon every Thursday and this is our blog. We aim to make you giggle, hook you up with detailed secret info and squash wack rumors.
